CTA Publishes Recommended Practice for ATSC 3.0 Television Sets, Physical Layer

CTA’s Audio and Video Systems Committee (R4) published CTA-CEB32.2-B, Recommended Practice for ATSC 3.0 Television Sets, Physical Layer. This bulletin provides recommended performance guidelines for the portion of a an ATSC 3.0 Television Set known as the “front-end,” which includes all circuitry from the antenna through Forward Error Correction (FEC) circuitry that is associated with recovery and demodulation of an ATSC 3.0 signal. The output of the front-end is the input to the IP Layer decoder of the ATSC 3.0 Television Set.

The logical layer includes the link-layer protocol, signaling, synchronization, error protection, and service announcement aspects of ATSC 3.0 emissions.

CTA’s Audio and Video Systems Committee (R4) recently published CTA-CEB32.10-A, Recommended Practice for ATSC 3.0 Television Sets, Watermarking and Content Recovery. This bulletin makes recommendations related to the capabilities of ATSC 3.0 Television Sets as regarding Content Recovery via Watermarked content.  The use of Watermarked A/V content allows ATSC 3.0 Television Sets to recover Service Information via broadband in order to provide the benefits of the ATSC 3.0 system, such as Broadcaster Applications and enhanced emergency alerting, in Redistribution environments where ATSC 3.0 Service Information is not available.

CTA Publishes Revision to the WAVE Device Playback Capabilities Specification

CTA’s WAVE Project published CTA-5003-B, Device Playback Capabilities Specification. CTA-5003-B defines requirements for playback of WAVE-compliant streaming media content. It addresses features like buffering (the playback device’s temporary storage of incoming content so it can be fed to the screen and speakers in a smooth, even fashion), encryption of streaming content, randomly accessing content mid-stream, and more.

CTA’s Health Fitness & Wellness Committee (R11) launched project, CTA-2134, Best Practices and Performance Requirements for Women’s Health Technologies. This document will provide general best practices when developing technology to ensure women’s health is considered. Best practices will be outlined through the lens of women’s lifecycle (e.g., Perimenopause/menopause and methodologies of measurement).

CTA Published, CTA-2034-B Standard Method of Measurement for In-Home Loudspeakers.

CTA-2034-B Standard Method of Measurement for In-Home Loudspeakers. This standard describes how to determine the frequency response, directivity, and maximum output capability of a residential loudspeaker. It is intended to determine the audio performance of a loudspeaker, not the loudspeaker's ability to survive a given input signal. This standard applies only to loudspeaker systems and not to raw transducers.

CTA’s Audio and Video Systems Committee (R4) recently published, CTA-2099-A Standard Method for Matching In-Home Amplifiers, Loudspeakers, and Subwoofers. This standard provides guidance when matching amplifiers to loudspeakers and subwoofers for various listening levels.

CTA publishes Specification for Selecting an Amplifier for use with a Loudspeaker System

CTA’s Audio and Video Systems Committee (R4) recently published CTA-2054 Specification for Selecting an Amplifier for use with a Loudspeaker System. This standard defines test conditions and measurement procedures for determining a maximum rated loudspeaker drive level of single-channel and multi-channel power amplifiers related to matching them with passive loudspeakers. It also describes a standardized format for reporting the measurement results, compatible with CTA-2034-B and CTA-2010-C reporting. Said amplifier(s) shall not be packaged with or specifically intended for use with dedicated loudspeakers. This standard applies to full-range amplifiers intended for home audio use and that use AC mains power.

CTA Published Interpretation Letter for ANSI/CTA-2037-D

CTA’s Audio and Video Systems Committee (R4) recently published an Interpretation Letter to ANSI/CTA-2037-D; this standard defines a method for measuring Television Set power consumption and Luminance. It is intended for Television Sets powered from an external source. Television Sets with a non-removable Main Battery are excluded. This standard is limited to Television Sets intended for indoor use and specifically excludes Television Sets designed for outdoor or wet or extreme temperature locations. Additionally, included in the document is an interpretation dated July 2024.

CTA Publishes CTA-861.7 – Improvements to CTA 867.I

CTA’s Audio and Video Systems Committee (R4) recently published, CTA-861.7 – Improvements to CTA 867.I. CTA-861.7 specifies changes to CTA-861-I, A DTV Profile for Uncompressed High Speed Digital Interfaces. The requirements of this standard are in addition to and complement CTA-861-I. All devices compliant to CTA-861.7 shall also comply with CTA-861-I, except that this standard modifies Sections 7.4, 7.5.14.1 through 7.5.14.4, and 7.5.19 of CTA-861-I.

CTA launches the WAVE Streaming Media Test Suite – Devices

CTA’s WAVE Project has launched its initial "WAVE Streaming Media Test Suite – Devices" to enable automated testing of web-based media playback on various devices like Smart TVs, media sticks and set-top boxes. Targeted at developers, this suite aims to streamline testing processes by allowing device implementers to prove compatibility with industry standards, reducing repetitive tests across the industry. It features unit tests for media using CMAF formats and web streaming technologies like MSE and EME. The suite also includes preliminary tests for popular video and audio codecs, with plans to expand codec testing in 2024.

CTA’s Health Fitness & Wellness Committee (R11) launched project, CTA/NSF-2052.3-A, Performance Criteria and Testing Protocols for Features in Sleep Tracking Consumer Technology Devices and Applications. This standard describes events (such as waking up), processes (such as REM sleep) and patterns (such as circadian amplitude), and how to figure out how well a consumer sleep monitoring determines if a person is asleep and, if so, which sleep stage the person is in.

CTA Publishes Accessibility Preferences Data Model

CTA’s Audio and Video Systems Committee (R4) recently published, CTA-2115, Accessibility Preferences Data Model. This document defines a standard vocabulary and data structures for communicating accessibility and related media settings, including closed captions/subtitles, language, and audio description preferences, for devices and software applications designed to receive or play back video programming transmitted in digital format simultaneously with sound. The scope of this vocabulary includes but is not limited to devices and software applications such as TVs, TV media applications, TV “sticks”, set-top boxes, web applications, and mobile device applications.

CTA Publishes Fast and Readable Geographical Hashing

CTA’s WAVE committee published CTA-5009, Fast and Readable Geographical Hashing. This document exists to remediate that. It describes the practice as it exists at the time of writing and provides general, straightforward algorithms for understanding and communicating with Geohashes. It also exists to serve as a stable reference document for a few IANA registrations. To that end, the algorithm documented in the “Technical description” section of the Geohash Wikipedia entry is described here. This document does not describe all the usages, limitations, or geographic and mathematical details for Geohashes because those are well described by the references.

CTA’s Cybersecurity and Privacy Management Committee (R14) published, ANSI/CTA-2088.2, Baseline Cybersecurity for Private Consumer Robotics. CTA-2088 specifies baseline device security capabilities and related organizational security capabilities and recommendations for devices and device systems, including for individual connected devices, endpoint devices, components, hardware modules, chips, software, sensors or other operating components. This standard (CTA-2088.2) builds upon the baseline cybersecurity requirements in CTA-2088 to address the cybersecurity requirements and recommendations relevant to the unique capabilities, uses, and applications of private consumer robots.

This standard designates identification numbers for 6 MHz channel frequency allocations for 158 channels up to 1002 MHz, with a method of specifying higher channel numbers.

CTA Publishes Emergency Messaging for Cable

CTA’s Audio and Video Systems Committee (R4) recently published, CTA-814-C R-2023, Emergency Messaging for Cable. This is a reaffirmation of ANSI/CTA-814-C/J-STD-42-C. This standard defines protocols for codes sent to consumer devices instructing them to automatically change channels to the dedicated channel with the emergency alert and instructing them how long to remain on the emergency channel until returning to the channel the viewer had been watching.
