Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence is beginning to transform many sectors of our economy. As AI becomes capable of executing more complex tasks, it will revolutionize even more aspects of our lives. We are already seeing many of the positive impacts. AI technologies are improving medical diagnoses, increasing efficiencies in agriculture, and detecting serious cyber threats. As AI becomes more ubiquitous, it will also raise an increasing number of questions about jobs, bias, cybersecurity and other serious issues.

At the beginning of 2018, CTA launched an AI working group to address questions around artificial intelligence technology and help guide CTA’s work on AI policy issues.

CTA is a leading voice on artificial intelligence issues on Capitol Hill. CTA president and CEO Gary Shapiro testified before the House Oversight & Government Reform Subcommittee on Information Technology at an Artificial Intelligence Public Policy hearing on April 18, 2018. To lay the groundwork for prudent AI policy, CTA has been hosting a series of AI educational events for Members of Congress and staff.

Policy Priorities:

  • Educate lawmakers on ways in which AI is poised to revolutionize many sectors of the economy, from healthcare to cybersecurity.

  • Prevent premature and overly-broad attempts to regulate AI in response to hypothetical or speculative harms.

  • Work with industry and government to mitigate biased outcomes from AI algorithms, ensure adequate data security, and prepare the American workforce for new opportunities created by AI.
