The Consumer Technology Association (CTA) is supporting the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington (BGCGW) to strengthen STEM learning and career development in the Washington DC metro area. The collaboration will help local students better understand the career opportunities the tech field offers and learn the skills they’ll need in the workforce of today and tomorrow.

“The STEM program at The Boys & Girls Club is an important resource for hundreds of youth in local communities across the country – a critical step toward making the tech sector more accessible to our nation’s diversity of talent,” said Tiffany Moore, senior vice president of political and industry affairs, CTA. “Through this collaboration, we hope to demystify STEM and create a rich pipeline for future tech jobs. BGCGW is making positive changes in the lives of its members, and CTA is committed to supporting the organization in helping develop the tech leaders of tomorrow. I know first hand the value Boys and Girls Clubs as a former club kid and I’m excited to support their work.’

BGCGW, a 133-year-old organization, supports students from all backgrounds by boosting confidence, developing character and helping them acquire the skills needed to become productive, civic-minded and responsible adults. Through CTA’s support, club members will learn the pathways that can lead to a career in tech, from a traditional college education to apprenticeships and internships. Students will also directly engage with CTA’s member companies to learn about current and future workforce trends, and proceeds from CTA’s Digital Patriots dinner will also support BGCGW.

“Tech and science are the future of the workforce and our country’s job creation,” said Gabrielle Webster, president and CEO, BGCGW. “Our collaboration with CTA will make a tremendous impact on our members, as they get more hands-on experience in STEM-related activities and get to know and emulate the diverse team of professionals at CTA. With the growing demand for a skilled workforce in our community, CTA’s support, mentorship and encouragement for our youth will be invaluable.”

As part of the collaboration, Club members went to CTA headquarters in Crystal City to talk with CTA staff, participate in an interview skills session and learn about tech trends. Students also had an opportunity to experience some cutting-edge tech products like virtual reality headsets and audio equipment.

CTA also partners with EVERFI to boost entrepreneurial skills among Las Vegas-area high school students by inviting them to pitch business ideas at CES.
