This research provides a deeper understanding of smart cities in Europe with findings that can be applied across the globe. It looks at the current landscape, growth drivers, how smart cities are being implemented, development barriers and their future. Specific objectives include:

• Documenting the current European landscape of smart cities technology (i.e., sensors, automation and data analytics) and the roles of city services and administration involved in this process
• Understanding the next step for deployment of smart cities technologies
• Determining the emerging technologies being considered that will impact future smart cities development
