The Consumer Technology Association (CTA)® commissioned this study to quantify the electricity consumption of consumer electronics (CE) in U.S. households in 2020. Devices analyzed include traditional consumer electronics, such as televisions and computers, as well as newer connected devices such as smart speakers. Relative to other energy end uses, electronics tend to have shorter product cycles, rapid adoption, and more varied usage patterns. Since product characteristics can change dramatically in just a few years, it is necessary to provide up-to-date energy consumption assessments, especially to inform energy policy decisions. This is the fifth study characterizing consumer electronics energy consumption in U.S. homes. Several new product categories were analyzed in depth, including digital media streaming devices, home security cameras, robot vacuums, smart speakers, virtual reality headsets, and uninterruptible power supplies.
