The following statement is attributed to Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, Consumer Technology Association (CTA), regarding the House passage of The "Safely Ensuring Lives Future Deployment and Research In Vehicle Evolution Act" or SELF DRIVE Act, which would increase opportunities for testing life-saving car technologies:
"The growing patchwork of legislation and rules across the country is a significant barrier to testing the full potential of self-driving vehicles. We appreciate the leadership of the House, especially Chairmen Greg Walden (R-OR) and Bob Latta (R-OH), Ranking Members Frank Pallone (D-NJ) and Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), and Debbie Dingell (D-MI), in establishing a clear direction about the proper roles of state and federal governments in regulating self-driving cars. CTA looks forward to continuing to work with policymakers to provide the consistency needed for companies to test and deploy this technology.
"This is a new frontier for policymakers, and it is imperative they get it right. Details matter and the right framework can help save tens of thousands of lives every year in the U.S. and lead to an American economic renaissance driven by innovation."
