CTA Applauds FCC Vote to Adopt Official “TV White Spaces” Rules
October 27, 2020
The following statement is attributed to Jamie Susskind, vice president, policy and regulatory affairs, Consumer Technology Association (CTA)®, regarding the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) vote today to adopt official rules around "TV White Spaces” or the unused spectrum between TV stations to expand rural connectivity:
“Today’s vote by the FCC is a victory for those across the country whose lives have been made more difficult from lack of access to a reliable internet connection. Technology allows us to work and learn remotely, keeping us in touch with our loved ones and the world. A viable internet connection is more critical than ever, and we must close the digital divide and deliver broadband to rural and underserved communities. Leveraging TV White Spaces for broadband use is an innovative solution that will help families across the United States live better lives—from better access to remote work and education to life saving digital health services and more. This is an idea long supported by CTA. As president and CEO Gary Shapiro wrote in CTA’s latest best-selling book, Ninja Future: Secrets to Success in the New World of Innovation, 'Opening this spectrum for broadband use can bring the benefits and opportunities of broadband to rural citizens.'”
