Foundation Grants

The foundation’s grants strategically support programs that improve the lives of seniors and people with disabilities. Because we consider grants part of a partnership, we work closely with our grantees to ensure their programs’ success.

    AARP Foundation

    The AARP Foundation developed a voice technology program – using Amazon’s Alexa – to connect seniors to one another.

    Ablegamers Charity

    The Ablegamers Charity gives people with disabilities custom gaming setups including modified controllers and special assistive technology to improve their quality of life. AbleGamers provides gaming hardware and software, virtual and onsite trainings, and ongoing support through peer counseling to various types of therapists at partner rehabilitation centers and hospitals across the United States.

    Access HEARS

    This program will connect 500 low-income, minority older adults in Montgomery County with hearing loss to over-the-counter hearing technologies. The Access HEARS intervention includes counseling, aural rehabilitation, and education on how to use affordable, accessible hearing technologies.

    Adler Aphasia Center

    The Adler Aphasia Center provides communication groups for adults with aphasia, a communication disorder. They will be introducing new technology into the member groups that will allow members to interact with technology, increasing their ability to communicate with their peers. Through these technology investments, hundreds of people with aphasia and their caregivers will benefit from therapeutic programming that promotes rehabilitation and greatly improves socialization.

    American Foundation for the Blind

    Created a set of tutorials for using the open source NVDA screen reader.

    American Printing House for the Blind

    Support for the VisionConnect Initiative creating resources to help people new to vision loss.

    Army Distaff Foundation

    Army Distaff Foundation provides housing, health, and wellness services to older people who served our nation. This grant assists ADF in enhancing the Make & Tech Lab at Knollwood Life Plan Community with updated consumer technologies, workshops, and training for aging seniors.

    Avenidas

    Avenidas provides virtual programming for vulnerable older adults, especially those who are homebound; who are not proficient speakers of English; or who are reluctant technology users. The grant will assist Avenidas in purchasing DTEN D7 systems for their virtual programs.

    Beneficent Technology, Inc., DBA Benetech

    Bookshare, the world’s largest digital library of accessible materials and support for Benetech’s flagship literacy initiative, developed an app that will work on smart speakers. The grant will assist Benetech in the development and release of Bookshare for Google Assistant.

    Blythedale Children’s Hospital

    Blythedale Children’s Hospital Assistive Technology (AT) program helps medically complex children overcome the physical, emotional, and social effects of congenital and acquired disabilities using assistive technology such as prosthetics and computer hardware and software.

    Funding will support people with disabilities and seniors in various technology programs purchase tablets, screen magnifiers and other assistive technologies.

    Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation

    Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation funds advancements in research and technology. This grant supports Remarkable US, the first nonprofit-funded assistive technology accelerator, which quickly brings affordable solutions to increase independence for disabled people. Expanding access to assistive technology ensures full societal inclusion for everyone, including people with disabilities and the aging population.

    Cincinnati Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CABVI)

    Cincinnati Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired provides computer training to individuals who are blind or visually impaired gain, maintain, or improve their employment. The grant will assist CABVI in purchasing access technology equipment for their computer lab training.

    Supporting new accessible features in PATRIOTLink® which helps service members, veterans, caregivers and social service professionals connect to eligible resources.

    Connecticut Institute for the Blind d/b/a/ Oak Hill

    Oak Hill’s NEAT Center Accessible Gaming program is designed to serve people with disabilities and promote gaming accessibility through assessments and awareness initiatives. This year's initiative will impact individuals with disabilities and their access to gaming through consultations, adaptable equipment, customized tools for each user's needs, and technology training and support.

    Council on Aging of Southwestern Ohio

    Council on Aging of Southwestern Ohio provides family caregiver training and experiences using the EVRTalk virtual reality (VR) program. COA’s innovative outreach and partnered events provide practical knowledge and empathy-building experiences via VR scenarios.

    Cyber-Seniors

    The Cyber-Seniors initiative this year aims to empower visually impaired student volunteers through specialized youth volunteer training. The program's objective is to equip these volunteers with comprehensive knowledge and resources, enabling them to provide dedicated assistance to visually impaired older adults. Specifically tailored to address the unique needs of this demographic, the training program emphasizes proficiency in navigating adaptive devices and technology. The initiative underscores a commitment to bridging the digital divide and fostering meaningful intergenerational connections.

    digitalLIFT (formerly Community Tech Network)

    Community Tech Network's 2024 initiative will provide computer training, ongoing technical support, and internet connections for 123 low income, socially isolated, homebound seniors who have been previously given a senior friendly computer or tablet by CTN. This program will facilitate seniors's access to tech as well as assistance with their tech devices; free replacement or repair as needed, and any other additional tech support.

    DOROT, Inc

    DOROT is replicating their Tech Coaching program throughout the country through a new partnership with the Village to Village Network (VtVN) providing individualized support to older adults.

    Easter Seals Greater Houston, Inc.

    BridgingApps, a program of Easter Seals of Greater Houston, will expand its website content – a digital compendium of mobile apps and short training videos focused on seniors and those with disabilities. The grant will also allow BridgingApps to expand the Did You Know – On the Go series that brings hands-on technology demonstrations and training to older adults in the community.

    EngAGE

    EngAGE serves low-income seniors' technological needs by providing connection to our virtual programs to battle isolation and loneliness during the pandemic and beyond. The grant will help fund their technology program to include tech training and support, devices, internet hot spots and program coordination to roll it out.

    The first-of-its-kind Accessible Products Hotline employed customer service agents with visual impairments to help low vision or blind consumers identify and support accessible products.
