This month, we mark the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), signed into law on July 26, 1990 by President George H.W. Bush. Since then, 61 million Americans with a disability have received the accessibility they deserve. This milestone is an opportunity to celebrate and reflect on the accomplishments and innovations that enable people to live, work and play independently.
Working with our nonprofit grant recipients and the technology industry, the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) Foundation sees firsthand the power accessible technologies offer. Products that enable far greater access and independence for users are coming from companies across our industry, and far too many to individually name, but they are small and large and cut across the many market segments in CTA’s membership. The CTA Foundation helps build connections and knowledge to encourage the design and adoption of these solutions. And we promote the entrepreneurship and innovation of people with disabilities and inclusion of diverse teams in the development of new technologies.
For the last five years, the CTA Foundation has hosted the CES® Eureka Park Accessibility Contest. Each year, we select five innovative startups that develop technology benefitting older adults or people with disabilities. Over the years, we’ve seen life changing products that create accessible interfaces and controls, enable mobility, create greater communication, and use sensors, services and other types of hardware and software that touch on a wide range of disabilities. We can’t wait to see what innovations are coming next! Keep an eye out for the launch of our next contest this summer.
CTA and the CTA Foundation also promote accessibility at CES through roundtables, panels, interviews and a program that convenes leaders from disability advocacy organizations to advance dialog, explore future technologies and influence future innovations.
Yes, we at the CTA Foundation celebrate this important milestone for the ADA and all those who benefit from it. But we also recognize there’s more to do—and we’ll continue working to advance innovative technologies that connect and empower us all.
Join our community of innovators and shape the future of technology.
