Today, United States Congressman James E. Clyburn (D-SC) discussed the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and restarting the economy, racial justice and other policy issues facing the nation in a Consumer Technology Association (CTA®) and Northern Virginia Technology Council ( NVTC) webinar.

Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the Consumer Technology Association, moderated the discussion with U.S. House Majority Whip Clyburn, which also covered the principles that guide his leadership style as well as the technology industry’s role in promoting diversity and inclusion, providing solutions from telemedicine to telework during COVID-19 and expanding internet access.

“COVID-19 has opened up a fault line and the greatness of America requires that we repair the fault line in health care, education and energy conservation in our nation,” said Congressman Clyburn. “We don’t have to make America great again. We have to make it accessible and affordable for all.”

“We must use technology to penetrate rural communities, to get broadband out there so these communities can access online learning and telehealth. That, to me, is our challenge today. Having broadband in every household will revolutionize healthcare, education and energy conservation in this country.”
