The following statement is attributed to Gary Shapiro, president, and CEO, Consumer Technology Association (CTA), regarding the 2018 midterm election results:
"After this election, we urge politicians in Washington to unite Americans around our shared values: optimism, innovation and competition – striving to improve our nation and the world.
"The U.S. technology industry is the driving force of the economy, supporting more than 15 million U.S. jobs and leading the world in innovation. The new Congress must continue advocating for policies that promote U.S. interests and leadership in the tech sector, especially at a time when other countries are targeting our most successful American tech companies. This includes pro-growth solutions that empower startups and small businesses, and create U.S. jobs. Congress must enable high-speed broadband and promote the rapid rollout of life-enhancing innovations such as self-driving vehicles and digital health technology. Finally, we must work together to ensure U.S. workers have the skills to succeed in a dynamic, tech-driven economy.
"It's also critical to end the escalating trade war; tariffs are a self-destructive strategy that hurts Americans. Already, Americans have paid $4.4 billion in tariffs just in September, and the economic pain will worsen next year when tariffs double on Chinese imports. China’s trade policies must change, but tariffs must be repealed before American companies and consumers are hit with even higher costs and suffer further damage."
