Morgan Hatfield, Social Media Intern, Consumer Technology Association

According to the new U.S. Consumer Technology Sales and Forecasts report, the total consumer technology industry will reach a record-breaking $398 billion in retail revenues for 2019. Leading this surge will be artificial intelligence and fast connectivity such as 5G.

Revenue Powerhouses

The top four revenue drivers for the industry that are showing continued success with pushing consumer spending to new levels are:

Smartphones: With this year marking the launch of 5G, revenue for 5G smartphones alone is expected to reach $1 billion. The entire smartphone sector is projected to reach $80 billion in revenue.

Laptops: Convertible models and cloud-based laptops continue to be high-growth areas since consumers strive to have the latest in upgrades for their operating systems. In 2019, the U.S. laptop market is expected to earn $28.4 billion in revenue.

Televisions: As seen at CES 2019, upgrades to 4K Ultra High-Definition (4K UHD) and 8K UHD TVs will help push the revenue to $16.4 billion and $545 million, respectively.

In-Vehicle Tech: In-vehicle entertainment and driver-assist features such as active collision avoidance, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control will contribute to the vehicle tech sector with a projected $17 billion in revenue for 2019.
